“Mr Mick” O’Reilly, the father of Vincent & Peter (Big Pete), was one of the first generation of O’Reilly’s. He returned to the Guesthouse in the mid 1940’s after running his own dairy near Maleny at a time where the Guesthouse was facing some financial hardship as a result of the war. At that time the Guesthouse was a public company, he initiated the move to buy back the shares and privatised the company, turning the business into a profitable venture. He persuaded his two sons, Peter and Vince, to return to work at the Guesthouse setting up the second generation management of the O’Reilly’s business. Mick and his wife Annie continued to handle the banking and running of Gran O’Reilly’s General store into the early ’80’s. Mick was one of the important visionaries of the O’Reilly story.
This ruby-violet Merlot opens with aromas of red and black berries, dark plums, and a touch of fruitcake spice. On the palate, redcurrant, blueberry, and damson plum come forward, joined by a hint of bramble fruit compote. Aged for 8 months in French oak, the wine develops subtle spice and cedar notes. Its soft, velvety texture and balanced tannins are complemented by bright acidity, leading to a smooth, satisfying finish.
Merlot is known for its medium-bodied, approachable style. Pour yourself a glass of this easy to enjoy wine on its own or paired with roasted meats, hearty pastas, or rich vegetarian dishes. Its elegance and versatility make it ideal for both casual and special occasions.
