DIVING PLATYPUS

The Platypus dives and forages for food with remarkable skill. When underwater, it keeps its eyes, ears, and nostrils tightly shut. Instead, it uses the sensitive touch receptors on its bill to detect small invertebrates hidden in the silt and gravel. It gathers its prey in cheek pouches and then surfaces to eat, grinding the food between firm, plate-like structures that act like teeth.
